The Hatikote forest area in Baripada Forest Division, Mayurbhanj District (Orissa) is endowed with a rich wealth of medicinal plants. The invaluable resource of medicinal plants is however, under serious threat from severe depletion due to grazing, fire, pilferage and social indiscretions in utilization. In the present paper 65 medicinal plants belonging to 34 families of flowering plants are tabulated with information about local name, habitat, family, parts used and their medicinal uses. Some important endangered medicinal plants have been identified and has taken attempt for their conservation in Hatikote area for maintaining the gene pool through ex-situ conservation. Other important issues closely related to the development of in-situ conservation has been established in 200 ha. Importance has been given towards public by which they can conserve their natural forest through identification, establishment a germ plasm banks of the selected species, procurement of seeds of different plots and water conservation by gully plugging. In pursuance of this goal, some management techniques has been developed for the protection and smooth management of the area through protection against grazing and illegal entry of people, tending operation, soil and water conservation, plantation, fire protection, entry point activities and final harvesting of medicinal plants.

Extensive mortality in mahogany plantations in Fiji Islands was found due to decay of ischolar_mains by Fomes noxius. Main disease symptoms include brown incrustation on the bark and white pocket rot in the wood of ischolar_mains and stems of affected trees. The disease spreads strictly by ischolar_main contact. Primary infection takes place through contact of mahogany ischolar_mains with infacted ischolar_mains of felled or poisoned standing trees of the original forest. Subsequent spread in lines takes place through ischolar_main contact between diseased and healthy mahogany plants. Plants upto 10 years age may be killed out right while in older plants, the disease establishes as butt rot. Pruning of tap ischolar_main before planting was found to have encouraged the development of more lateral ischolar_mains than in plants raised from direct seed sowing. An attempt was made to identify the species of infection sources in 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1971 plantations. In 44 infection centres, 15 species of natural forests were identified which had been colonized by F. noxius and thus had served as source of infection to mahogany plants. F.noxius was found to attack and kill many tree species in natural forests but infection centres were confined to limited areas only. Two hundred twenty nine isolates of Magnaporthe grisea were collected from finger millet cultivars at 14 locations in north India (Uttarakhand) and two locations in south India (Tamilnadu&Karnataka). Each isolate was tested for the mating types (Male fertile and female sterile) using standard fertile testers. Per cent isolates that neither mated nor produced perithecia was high among isolates collected from south India than those from Uttarakhand. Male fertile and hermaphrodite isolates from cooler region showed greater efficiency to produce perithecia. Results revealed that distribution of mating type varied with geographical region. Male fertile and female sterile isolates segregated in 1:1 ratio among field isolates collected from both north and south India. Field isolates from north India showed equal probability of getting male fertile, female sterile and hermaphrodite isolates, which suggested that probability for sexual reproduction in the population of M. grisea existed in nature in the central Himalayas of India.Keywords

A number of steps are involved in manufacturing process of an insulated wire. One of the most significant steps of all is controlling the temperature of the poly vinyl chloride (PVC) material which we are going to control using fuzzy logic. The required temperature is set in accordance to the grade of the PVC material available, with no need of manual surveillance. The purpose of this paper is to implement fuzzy logic in wire manufacturing and thus make it autonomous.Keywords

Saliva contains a wide range of proteins, antibodies, nucleic acids that makes it an important diagnostic fluid. The most effective non-invasive source of DNA, RNA and protein is saliva, which comes from buccal epithelial cells. The saliva from the healthy and the diabetic individuals was collected with volunteers concern. We quantified the protein content spectrophotometrically and it was found that the protein was decreased in the diabetic individual. The protein was resolved in SDS-PAGE and the protein profiles of whole saliva of healthy and diabetic were compared. Considerable variations between individuals were observed. The spectrophotometric quantification of sialic acid showed a significant increase in its levels in diabetic individuals as compared with non-diabetics.Keywords

Justicia gendarussa is a rare medicinal plant belonging to the family Acanthaceae. An efficient protocol for in-vitro propagation of Justicia gendarussa has been developed. The shoot initiation, callus development and phytochemical analysis were studied. MS medium supplemented with BAP (2 mg/l) induced shoot formation from nodal explants. Thick friable calli were producecd at lower concentrations of NAA (0.5 mg/l) and BAP (2 mg/l). The dried powder of leaf, stem and ischolar_main of Justicia gendarussa were analysed for phytochemical screening.Keywords

The application of Trichoderma viride on loose smut infected seeds (Ustilago segetum var. tritici) or in soil, reduced the smutted tillers up to 17.5 per cent. However, treatment of T. viride alone was not as effective as carboxin seed treatment in the control of loose smut. Maximum reduction was observed in dry seed treatment with antagonist as well as seed treatment plus soil application. The effect of T. viride was more prominent in the seed lot having lower level of loose smut infection. Application of T. viride along with half dose of carboxin was however. found as effective as full recommended dose of carboxin (2.5 g/kg of seed). Soaking of seeds in tap water for 24h also reduced tbe incidence of loose smut by 15.4 per cent.Keywords

Background:Alpha-2 agonists are added to local anesthetic agents to extend the duration of peripheral nerve blocks.Objective: We evaluated the effect of combining dexmedetomidine with levobupivacine with respect to duration of motor and sensory block and duration of analgesia.
Material and Methods: Sixty patients of ASA grade I or II aged between 18-60 years, posted for elective upper limb surgeries were enrolled for a prospective, randomized, double-blind study. Patients were divided into two groups, the control group B and the study group BD. In group B (n = 30), 30 ml of 0.325% levobupivacaine + normal saline; and in group BD (n = 30), 30 ml of 0.325%levobupivacaine + 1μg/kg dexmedetomidine were given for ultrasound guided supraclavicular brachial plexus block. Duration of motor and sensory block and time to first rescue analgesia were recorded..
Results: Demographic profile and surgical characteristics were similar in both groups. The onset times for sensory and motor blocks were significantly shorter in BD group (p < 0.05), while the duration of sensory and motor blocks and duration of analgesia (DOA) was significantly longer in BD group. Heart rate level and SBP and DBP levels in group BD were significantly lower 15-20 min after block (p < 0.05). Bradycardia was observed in two patients in the group BD. No other adverse effects were observed in either of the groups.
Conclusion: Dexmedetomidine added as an adjuvant to levobupivacaine for supraclavicular brachial plexus block significantly shortens the onset time and prolongs the duration of sensory and motor blocks and duration of analgesia.

Background: Finding of pulmonary nodule in chest X-ray or CT scan during routine investigations or during surveillance for metastasis, in known case of malignancy is not an uncommon occurrence. Even after all routine evaluation, if nature of such a pulmonary nodule cannot be characterized as either benign or malignant then it is termed as Indeterminate Pulmonary Nodule (IPN).
Aim of this study is to put some light on the way to assess such IPN in simplified manner form a surgeon's perspective so that the unnecessary surgery or morbidity and mortality associated with it can be avoided.
Methods: For this article, extensive literature search was performed, using online search engine PubMed, Google, Cochrane database etc. Out of 474 articles, 42 Articles which fulfilled all the eligible criterion, were used for this study.
Results: Most of the studies are in favour of evidence based, step mannered and pragmatic approach to evaluate the IPN. Foremost and most important step in course of evaluation of IPN is proper clinical evaluation and risk assessment in terms of pre-test probability of malignancy. Although morphological characterisation can be done with newer advance imaging techniques but the only way to confirm the malignancy is getting a tissue biopsy.
Conclusions: With proper clinical evaluation, risk assessment analysis and prudent use of advance imaging techniques, a surgeon can prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with unnecessary surgery and other invasive interventions.

Molybdenum toxicity produces a state of secondary hypocuprosis, resulting into alterations in normal hematological profile. In the present study, ammonium molybdate alone and with copper sulfate (II) pentahydrate (ameliorative agent) was administered orally for 30 consecutive days in healthy goats of group 1 and 2, respectively, to access the effect on the hematological profile on different predetermined days of dosing. Administration of ammonium molybdate alone produced significant decline in the mean values of hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total leukocyte count (TLC), total erythrocyte count (TEC), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), with a significant increase in neutrophil level and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). However, values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and differential leukocyte count were not significantly altered. On comparing observations of ameliorative group with the group 1 goats, it is concluded that the ameliorative copper salt has beneficial effects in alleviating the alterations in the values of Hb, PCV, TLC, TEC, MCV, MCHC, and neutrophils.Keywords

The concept of development of microbial consortia for bio-control relies on the fact that bioagents under natural habitats live in communities with some benefits for plants. Application of bioagents in a consortium may improve efficacy, reliability and consistency of the bioagents even under diverse soil and environmental conditions. Diversity in biocontrol mechanisms offered by each bioagent in consortium may help in enhancing disease suppressiveness and may also strengthen the capabilities of the partners in an additive or synergistic manner. Till now no guideline has been published for the evaluation of bioagents to test their compatibility before developing bioagent consortium. In the present studies compatibility among biocontrol potential Trichoderma-Pseudomonas and Trichoderma-Trichoderma isolates was studied by dual culture, mixed formulations and using cell free cultures. In dual culture all the combinations (14 no.) were found compatible with each other as no isolate inhibited the growth of one-another i.e. absence of inhibition zone. All the mixed formulations of potential Trichoderma-Pseudomonas isolates (8 no.) were found compatible with each other as they were growing simultaneously on PDA without antagonizing the growth of other or formation of inhibition zone in their combinations. The cell free cultures of each Trichoderma and Pseudomonas isolates tested with each other using Food Poison Technique showed synergistic effects on their fresh mycelial weight among some combinations while majority showed no significant differences with their checks. Further all the combinations (14 no.) were tested for their effects on seed germination and vigour index of chickpea in glasshouse. All the combinations showed significantly better seed germination while some combinations viz. Th14+Psf173, TCMS36+Psf173,Th17+Th19,Th17+Psf2,Th17+TCMS36 and Th14+Psf2 showed better plant vigour index (43.5 to 44.9% ) as compared to their checks (28.8 to 41.5%).These guidelines could be used before developing bioagent consortium and evaluation in field for crop health management.

Food security of our country is at risk due to heavy yield losses of agricultural crops caused by pests and diseases known together as biotic stresses. Conventional management practices in vogue are not competent under the current situations obscured by the incitants of biotic stresses which have either enhanced their offensive capabilities due to adaptive mutations or regained their pathogenic/ herbivory potential owing to climate change. Numerous causal agents of biotic stresses are also introduced in the country or new regions of the country either through natural dispersal as invasive species, or on account of quarantine irregularities at national or international levels. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to appraise the impact of these new biotic stresses burgeoned in the recent past and to develop novel technologies for their management. To devise an effective preventive and eradicative strategy for containing these biotic stresses, new research innovations need to be practiced such as deciphering basic/molecular mechanism of host-pathogen/insect interactions; endophytic mechanisms of plant protection; nanotechnology in pest management; host resistance strengthening by gene cloning, recombinant DNA technologies, RNA biology, utilizing gene editing technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9, etc. This article presents a comprehensive account of new biotic stresses of agricultural crops built up in the country and also reviews the novel scientific inventions made worldwide which can be further employed to devise more efficient methods for alleviating impact of these biotic stresses of food crops in the country.Keywords
